The Best Tapas in Barcelona: 7 Picks I Personally Recommend

Carole Voigt

Barcelona offers tapas on every corner, but not every corner is worth it. Here are seven tapas spots I'd personally choose, each with a unique reason to visit.

Barcelona offers tapas on every corner, but not every corner is worth it. The best spots aren't on Google's front page but are known to locals or those who've explored enough to know the truth. Here are seven tapas restaurants in Barcelona that I personally recommend, scattered throughout the city, each with a distinct reason to visit.

Tapas in Barcelona: Where I Start

Casa Alfonso is the kind of place where you walk in and immediately know how the evening will unfold. Hams hang from the ceiling, the space is small, and there are a few tables outside for the lucky ones. We had octopus and eggplant, both done to perfection. No reservations, just go. Located in Eixample, it's easy to combine with a stroll around the neighborhood. Also check out the best restaurants in Eixample for more spots in the area.

Vinitus; Classic Tapas with No Fuss, and You Can't Reserve

Vinitus is lively yet reliably good. You're among locals and tourists, and the food is simply excellent. I went for jamón and croquetas, just as they should be, quick and fuss-free. It's the kind of place you'll walk into again without hesitation. No reservations, just go and wait if you must.

Perikete; Iberico Ham and Wine Barrels as Tables

Perikete resembles a dark beer tavern with wine barrels as tables, and that's exactly the vibe. Busy, quick, good. The iberico ham is the kind you stop talking for. One of the best tapas bars in Barcelona, and it shows. Service is fast, quality high, and the atmosphere unpretentious.

La Pepita; Crisp Bread, Good Wine, and Always Open

La Pepita is lively, uncomplicated, and full of energy. The tapas are unique; crisp bread, good wine, everything in balance. It's busy, it's fast, but everything works. Open seven days a week from 1 PM, making it a logical choice for a spontaneous lunch. Just walk in.

Bar Brutal; Dark Atmosphere and an Original Menu

Bar Brutal is darker than most tapa spots, with a menu that offers something different. Burrata with fresh ham, Spanish cheeses, roasted leek with sugared onion and figs, fresh tuna with melon; this isn't your standard tapas menu. Accessible enough for those who just want a good meal, but with enough uniqueness to come back for something new.

Tantarantana; An Authentic Spot Over Two Floors

Tantarantana is located in Ciutat Vella and is precisely the kind of charming authentic spot you sometimes search for but rarely find. Small, over two floors, with a standard tapas menu executed well. The bomba barceloneta on the menu is the reason to go; a city classic, done right here. Good value for money.

Bar Alegria; Casual Outdoor Dining

Bar Alegria is situated on a charming square in Eixample, with a lovely terrace. The truffle tortilla is a must. Bar Alegria is laid-back, good food, sometimes with music in the background. Everything here is good, nothing complicated.

Seven Times Tapas in Barcelona: For Every Time of Day

And that completes the circle: Casa Alfonso for octopus and hanging hams. Vinitus for classic tapas without thinking. Perikete for the best iberico ham in the city. La Pepita for a spontaneous lunch. Bar Brutal for those who want a slightly quirky menu. Tantarantana for an authentic spot in Ciutat Vella. Bar Alegria for a truffle tortilla on a terrace. How about a tapas food tour?
